CHVRCHES – Bela Lugosi’s Dead

Considered by some as the first gothic rock song and undoubtedly influlential on the goth culture, Bela Lugosi’s Dead is the first single of English post-punk band Bauhaus.
The band broke up for second and final time in late-2007, but their legacy wasn’t about to end just like that. Scottish trio CHVRCHES – a viral band of the recent years, recorded a cover of “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” for the 2014 movie “Vampire Academy”. The cover grabbed our attention because of two facts: first, whilst a cover song, it is almost completely different from the original. It is worth noting that the Bauhaus’ track was recorded in a single take (live in a studio), it’s over nine minutes long, and vocals don’t start until a few minutes into the track. The CHVRCHES’ version, however, is way shorter and energetic, and Lauren (Mayberry) kicks it from the very beginning. And the second fact? It sounds as a pure modern classic. Yes.
